What you are probably seeing
- A steady line of ants along a worktop, skirting or window frame
- Small heaps of what looks like sawdust near timber — a carpenter ant sign
- Winged ants indoors, which can mean a colony inside the structure
- Trails back within days of cleaning them away

- Follow the trails back to the nest or the point of entry

Why does spraying the trail backfire?
With some species a repellent spray triggers the colony to split and set up satellite nests elsewhere. You turn one nest into several.
Are carpenter ants as bad as termites?
Slower. They hollow out timber to nest in rather than eating it, and they go for wood that is already damp — so they usually point at a moisture problem as well.
Are fire ants an issue in your area?
Regional. Where they are established, they need treating as colonies rather than mound by mound, because a disturbed colony simply moves elsewhere in the same garden.
